Walking the Ridge

Hiking and Backpacking Itinerary (2011)

This page has the latest details on our next trip. Use it to prepare and plan for our next adventure (19 to 22 November).

Next hike will be the Wallace Gap to the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) on the Appalachian Trail (AT).
Specifically south to north from Wallace Gap to the NOC (in North Carolina).
I am expecting quite a few hikers on this trip to include some young men, some young ladies a new guy and several old guys.

This hike is approximately 31 miles and it will be a lot of fun.

This particular hike will be "medium" in terms of difficulty but the mileage is limited and the camping has been maximized.

Dates are 19 - 22 November inclusive.

We are driving to the mountains early Saturday morning (19 November).

It's about a 4 hour drive so we'll want to meet at the "Rally Point" no later than 7 AM on Saturday morning.

Rally point for this trip will be the Shell Gas Station (Circle K) at the intersection of Highway 28 (Furys Ferry) and North Belair road in Evans.

Seam seal those tents. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Seam Seal that Tent

It's no fun being stuck in the rain in a tent that leaks!

Drivers have been assigned and the plan is as follows:

(19 – 22 November 2011)

Vehicle assignments are as shown above.
Meet your respective driver at their residence sometime between 0600 and 0630 hours.
We’ll all meet at the Shell Gas Station (Circle K) at the intersection of N. Belair Rd and Furys Ferry in Evans after we’re all loaded up.

Skip and his crew are driving from Maryland so he'll meet us at Wallace Gap at 1030 hours Saturday morning.

Departure time is 0700 hours, sharp.

We are going to hike the route from South to North as there is a lot more room for parking vehicles at the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center).

So here’s the vehicle logistics plan:

All drivers will drive to Wallace Gap and drop off their passengers (passengers get to begin their hike at that time).

Then all drivers will drive to the NOC.  Everyone will park at the NOC except Ken and Joe.

Ken and Joe will load up all the drivers at the NOC and drive them back to Wallace Gap where they (Ken and Joe) will park their vehicles and all the drivers will begin their hike.

After we’ve all made it to the NOC, Bill will take Joe and Ken to Wallace Gap to pick up their vehicles.

Bill, Joe and Ken will drive back to the NOC, load up their passengers and head home (via Wendy’s).

Let me know if this works for everyone.

For this hike you'll need food for 10 meals (3 Breakfasts, 4 Lunches, 3 Dinners) and your trail snacks. You'll be hungry!
